Dave Johnson did the conceptual designs for the original ten aliens, I don't know what directly influenced him. I know he studies artistic styles from far and wide but the circumstances that surround getting designs approved by network executives seldom allows one to remain true to one specific source of inspiration. You kind of have to think on your feet and revise things at a moments notice.
